The Moment the Map Said 'Yes' — And How It Helped Us Understand the Road
Building AI-powered tools for everyday life in Kenya has been a journey of both challenges and small victories. Reflecting on recent projects, I find myself particularly proud of the moments when the tools I've built started to understand the real-world problems they were meant to solve.
This week, I found myself reflecting on the many hours spent building tools that serve real people. As a builder, it's easy to get lost in the code, the algorithms, and the endless possibilities AI can offer. But it's in the moments when the tools actually start to understand the world — and the people using them — that the work feels meaningful.
One of the most rewarding experiences came from working on Arise & Shine Transporters. This logistics platform was built to solve a problem that had long been ignored in the sand and aggregate delivery industry: lack of visibility, inaccurate cost tracking, and inefficient fleet management. It was during a late night debugging session that the map finally said 'yes' — the GPS data aligned with the real-world route, and the system could accurately calculate delivery costs based on distance. That moment was not just a technical success, but a confirmation that the tool was beginning to understand the actual work being done on the roads of Kenya.
Working on Local Dialect, I was reminded of the importance of language and culture in building tools that truly resonate with users. This language learning app was created not just to teach words and grammar, but to help users connect with their heritage. The AI collaboration that helped design the lesson structure was invaluable. It allowed me to create an interactive experience that went beyond rote memorization and into real conversational contexts — a step toward preserving the rich linguistic diversity of East Africa.
Rev & Learn was another project that taught me a great deal about the power of context. It's one thing to build an educational platform for children, but it's another to ensure that the content reflects the Kenyan curriculum and cultural context. The AI collaboration helped structure the age-appropriate question packs in a way that felt both engaging and relevant to the children using it. It was a reminder that even the smallest details — like the language used in a question or the cultural references included — can make a big difference in the effectiveness of a tool.
In the end, every project has its challenges. There were times when the code didn't work as expected, when the AI didn't understand the question, or when the user interface didn't feel intuitive. But these challenges are part of the process. They are the moments of discovery, the times when the builder learns and grows alongside the product being built.
