From Frustration to Focus: My Journey with Arise & Shine Transporters and AI
Wambugu Martin discusses how his frustration turning a manual logistics operation into an efficient system led him to use Claude, Codex for AI integration.
The Real World of Building Arise & Shine Transporters
In the early days, building Arise & Shine Transporters was like trying to juggle while blindfolded. I had this sand and aggregate delivery business that used phone calls, paper records, and a bit of manual oversight for everything. It was chaotic — drivers were often driving unauthorised routes or idle between jobs.
I knew something had to change.
The First Clue: Distance-Aware Pricing
One day in Thika, Kenya, while I watched my operations manager calculate delivery costs by hand, it hit me like a bolt of lightning—there was no way this system could scale with the business growing. Distance-aware pricing made sense; let's use GPS to figure out what each delivery should actually cost based on distance alone.
The Moment It Worked
I had Claude and Codex collaborate on creating an AI model that would calculate these costs dynamically, every time a new order was placed. When I tested it live with one of the drivers handling some deliveries themselves? Bam! That driver calculated their first delivery at exactly KES 32,097 — spot-on.
The difference was profound. With distance pricing and real-time cost calculations, we could now charge more accurately for our services, which gave us a clear profit margin that wasn’t previously possible without automation.
Insights From the AI: Role-Based Dashboards
Next up were role-based dashboards—admin had full access while ops managers got to see everything from dispatching orders and monitoring vehicle performance. Parents of students who use Rev & Learn also got their own dashboard so they could track progress on individual children’s learning journeys, all powered by Claude's insights.
The Human Touch
When the Arise & Shine Transporters mobile app went live with a Google Play Store version that parents and drivers alike used daily? It was like we finally had our hands off an incredibly stable system. People were actually able to see real-time data on their devices, no more scrambling for spreadsheets.
We started seeing positive feedback from the ground up—drivers who felt safer knowing they couldn't be overcharged, parents of students who saw improvements in learning outcomes through consistent tracking and parental involvement via dashboards. It was a sweet taste of relief after all those years of manual labor."
"## From Confusion to Clarity: The Role of AI Collaboration
Throughout the entire process with Arise & Shine Transporters, I couldn’t have done it without Claude's guidance and Codex for its vast trove of knowledge. They helped me through many iterations—model refinement, integration testing, even understanding how certain features would work in real-world contexts.
For example, when we introduced those GPS-telemetry capabilities? It took some trial and error to get the right data flow working seamlessly with all our backend systems. Claude's collaboration enabled us to find solutions quickly without too much downtime or additional costs."
"## Connecting Back to Human Experience: The People Who Matter
Ultimately, seeing Arise & Shine Transporters go live wasn’t just about technical challenges; it was also about understanding the people who would benefit most from these changes—drivers and parents. Knowing I could provide them with better tools that made their jobs easier or allowed for more informed choices in education? It felt like all my efforts finally paid off.
The feedback loop of Claude’s insights, Codex's knowledge base, and real-world testing has not only improved the product but also ensured it is meeting its intended purpose—enabling smoother operations and better outcomes. In this journey with Arise & Shine Transporters, I learned that AI isn’t just a technology; it’s about humanizing solutions to everyday problems."
