The Clarity of Need: A Personal Journey with Arise & Shine Transporters
Wambugu Martin shares his personal journey from the frustration of manual logistics management to building an AI-powered solution for sand and aggregate delivery in Kenya.
The Dawn of a Problem"
In the heart of Nairobi, I sat at my computer one sunny morning pondering how much longer this could continue. A local business owner had approached me with tales of struggle: tracking deliveries manually was like playing Whac-A-Dot — guess where each truck would be next and hope you weren't wrong.
Claude's Insight: "Why not automate something that’s been so frustrating for everyone involved? GPS tracking, cost auditing, everything could be streamlined if only we had the right tech."
I dismissed it at first. The idea seemed grandiose — or maybe just impossible with such a small budget and team size. But then I realized: automation isn't about making one person's job easier; it’s about creating systems that free up time for those who need to focus on strategy over execution.
Codex Collaboration: "Think of the insights we can gather from real-time data, the predictive models you could build based on past performance. It’s not just about automating tasks now — but forecasting and adapting in real-time."
I started looking into what was possible without breaking the bank. That’s when I discovered OpenAI's capabilities through Claude. Its ability to simulate conversations with customers, providing insights into pricing strategies that aligned perfectly with our needs.
With a bit more research, we saw how Protrack 365 and Cartrack Fleet APIs could plug directly into our backend stack — integrating GPS telemetry data seamlessly. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.
The Path to Realization
I built the first version of what would become Arise & Shine Transporters in approximately three weeks, diving deep into Node.js for the server and React/Typescript for the frontend. Each line of code felt like an experiment; I needed something that could work out-of-the-box with minimal setup.
Claude's Role: "Help me understand your customers better so we can fine-tune features to meet their needs more accurately."
I watched Claude’s analysis closely, noting patterns in customer feedback and how they interacted with the platform. He provided detailed reports on common pain points like misaligned expectations between providers and receivers. This gave us a clearer picture of what needed improvement.
It took several iterations but eventually led to an intuitive user interface where customers could easily input their data and receive real-time updates. The distance-based pricing model was simple yet effective; it allowed for dynamic adjustments based on market conditions without requiring extensive manual calculations.
Shifting from Frustration to Focus
The shift from simply building the platform to seeing tangible improvements in efficiency marked a turning point. Now, instead of being stuck behind desks manually checking GPS coordinates every day, delivery managers could focus more on strategic planning and customer relationships rather than mundane tracking tasks.
Claude continued to push our boundaries, helping us identify new opportunities for growth such as integrating social media automation tools (using FB’s API) for 2-day scheduling horizons. This not only streamlined operational processes but also opened up potential marketing strategies leveraging these insights effectively.
In retrospect, what started out as a personal challenge turned into a mission critical to the success of this local business and beyond. It showed me firsthand how AI could bridge communication gaps between entities previously operating in silos — creating value that goes far beyond just automating tasks."
