"The Road to Clarity — A Builder's Reflection on AI, Logistics, and the Power of Listening Building AI-powered products for everyday life in Kenya is as much about understanding people as it is about writing code. This reflection explores the challenges, surprises, and moments of pride from recent work, revealing the human side of the process. Building AI-powered products for everyday life in Kenya is as much about understanding people as it is about writing code. It’s a journey filled with uncertainty, moments of clarity, and the occasional breakthrough that makes it all worthwhile. This week, I want to reflect on what was hard, what surprised me, and what I’m proud of as I work on these tools that aim to make life a little easier for real people in Kenya.
Working on Arise & Shine Transporters, the logistics platform for sand and aggregate delivery, has been both rewarding and challenging. The initial phase involved figuring out how to integrate GPS telemetry and distance-based pricing into a system that was once entirely manual. There were times when the data didn’t align with what the truck drivers were reporting. It was frustrating, but it also forced me to listen carefully — not just to the data, but to the people who use the system. One of the most surprising moments came when the AI-powered anomaly detection flagged a route deviation that turned out to be a driver taking a shortcut to avoid a roadblock. It wasn’t a mistake — it was a smart move. That taught me that AI doesn’t just find problems; it can also reveal insights that humans might overlook.
With Mwalimu Cosmetics, the e-commerce platform for cosmetics, the biggest challenge was making sure the AI-assisted development didn’t compromise the user experience. The platform needed to be intuitive for customers and manageable for the store owner. The AI helped structure the initial codebase, but the real work came in refining the user flows and ensuring the checkout process was seamless. One of the most rewarding moments was when the first customer successfully placed an order — it was a reminder that even small steps can lead to meaningful outcomes.
Local Dialect, the language learning app for Kenyan and African languages, has been a deeply personal project. It’s about preserving and promoting the languages that shape our identity. The challenge here was not just in building the app, but in ensuring the content was culturally relevant and engaging for learners. The AI helped structure the learning modules, but the real surprise came when a user sent a message saying they had rediscovered a forgotten dialect through the app. That was a proud moment — not just for the product, but for the community it serves.
Rev & Learn, the educational quiz platform for children, has been about making learning fun and accessible. The most surprising aspect was how quickly the AI-assisted content creation adapted to different age groups. It wasn’t just about creating questions — it was about understanding how children learn, and how to make the experience engaging. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing a parent share how their child had improved their reading skills after using the app regularly.
Planner, the AI-powered planning assistant, has been a test of how AI can help with decision-making rather than just task management. The hardest part was ensuring that the AI’s reasoning felt natural and not robotic. The most surprising moment came when a user shared how the app helped them prioritize their goals in a way they hadn’t considered before.
